Queen's Fort
is situated on a koppie and has become known in the local folklore, as the Old Fort and
later as Fort Bloemfontein. The building was completed in 1849 and it was used both
as military headquarters as well as a hospital. It was used from 1913 onwards for
the care of mentally ill patients with serious criminal inclinations as well as a gaol.
For the benefit of modern visitors a section of an old passage was conserved
unchanged.
Today the museum portrays mainly the military history of the Free State. It includes
displays from the Difaquane, the two World Wars and the Struggle.
