The Gen. Fick Museum at Ficksburg was opened in 1981. It consists of three
themes: the history of Ficksburg, the sandstone industry and the cherry culture. Ficksburg
is situated in the centre of the Free State sandstone fields. The industry contributed to
the unique architectural style of the eastern Free State since the 1880’s.
The district of Ficksburg is today also the most important producer of cherries and asparagus in the Republic of South Africa. Cherries have been produced in the area since 1904.
