The essence of Africa is tangible in Sandveld Nature Reserve where majestic camel thorn trees characterize the savanna veld. This reserve, situated in the Kalahari thornveld biome, is 37 700 ha in area and includes the Bloemhof Dam. Gemsbok, blue wildebeest, kudu, rhino, buffalo and giraffe thrives here. The reserve abounds with small mammals such as aardwolf, antbear, porcupine and springhare. Large numbers of egrets, cormorants, ibis, ducks, geese and flamingoes gather at different times of the year on the dam and along its edges. Social weavers have built several communal nests in the reserve which the diminutive pygmy falcon sometimes inhabits. White- backed vultures breed in large nests on top of camel thorn trees, and the crimsonbreasted shrike an hornbills with their typical bushveld calls, are also to be seen in the reserve.
