Great expanses of field, covered with Karoo vegetation, interspersed with rocky outcrops adorned with massive boulders, stretch from the Caledon River in the north, to the faster flowing Orange River in the south. Though dry spells reduce these two rivers to a trickle, both become untamable during rainy spells.
Visitors will enjoy the wide open skies, especially at night, when the solitude and the bright stars combine to invite star-gazing. Large herds of blesbok and springbok as well as eland, kudu, red hartebeest and zebra have found sanctuary here.
Aasvoëlkop is a prominent koppie near the eastern border of the Reserve. Both Bushmen and vultures took refuge here in days gone by. Today Bushmen paintings and white stains bear silent testimony to their earlier presence.
Grass and Karoo vegetation cover the open plains while besembush, wild olive trees and bush guarri are scattered over the koppies. Cape and weeping willow trees, white stinkwood, star apple and suurtaaibush fringe the two rivers.
